Vacations in Gerakini

About Gerakini

Gerakini is located in Toroneos gulf between the two fingers of Kassandra and Sithonia at peninsula of Chalkidiki. Chalkidiki is a region of Macedonia and geographically constitutes the ending of Central Macedonia in Aegean sea. It is 80 km from the second largest city Thessaloniki and 65 km from the international airport.

Gerakini is the seaport of Polygyros. Polygyros is the capital of Halkidiki and is 10 km away.

The story unfolds around a legend. According to legend there was a queen named Yerakina. She lived and worked in this place and from her name the place named Gerakini.

Gerakini consists of three different parts that are spaced apart: the middle section where the village is extended, the northern and southern part.

The villagers are mainly farmers who grow olive tree and produce olive oil and edible olives.

At the northern part all residents are workers and technicians involved in the mining and manufacturing magnesite “white stone” as a raw material to use in many applications.

The first mining plant began operating in the early twentieth century. Ships from all over the world come to Gerakini for the freight of material.

The southern part of the sea is very famous as a place suitable for summer vacation. It began its development in the early seventies, when a seaside resort was opened on the beach. Gradually the land increased and other facilities generated over the years to accommodate the tourist public.
